Marian McPartland

Marian McPartland was a revered British jazz pianist, composer, and radio host whose career spanned over six decades, making her one of the most enduring and celebrated figures in jazz history. Born Margaret Marian Turner on March 20, 1918, in Slough, England, she was classically trained at the Guildhall School of Music but found her true calling in the world of jazz. She began her professional career performing for troops during World War II, where she met her husband, jazz cornetist Jimmy McPartland, and subsequently moved to the United States after the war.

Marian McPartland emerged as a prominent figure in the jazz scene, particularly known for her lyrical piano style and her ability to blend classical technique with the improvisational elements of jazz. She released numerous albums as a leader and collaborated with many jazz greats. She was also a tireless advocate for jazz education, often conducting workshops and lectures. Perhaps her most enduring legacy is "Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz," a National Public Radio show which she hosted from 1978 to 2011. The program featured McPartland interviewing and performing with a wide array of musicians and cemented her status as an insightful and accessible voice in the jazz community. McPartland passed away on August 20, 2013, but left behind a rich recording legacy, including works like "Twilight World" and "Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz with Brad Mehldau," which continue to inspire and influence jazz aficionados and musicians around the world.
