HHY & The Kampala Unit

HHY & The Kampala Unit is a dynamic East African collective formed in 2017 during Jonathan Saldanha's residency at Nyege Nyege in Kampala, Uganda. The project is a collaborative fusion led by Saldanha, who is known for his work as HHY & The Macumbas, featuring powerful trumpet player and activist Florence Lugemwa, and percussionist Omutaba. Their music blends dub, techno, traditional drumming, and trance elements, creating a futuristic soundscape that is both cerebral and raw, steeped in local rhythms and modern electronic textures.

Their debut album, *Lithium Blast* (2020), released on the Kampala-based label Nyege Nyege Tapes, is a bold and hypnotic journey mixing eerie, sci-fi atmospheres with intense percussion and brass, echoing contemporary Ugandan realities like environmental challenges posed by industrial modernization. The group's music embodies a trance ritual for the future, rooted in ancestry but pushing sonic boundaries with a mesmerizing and infectious energy. Their more recent releases, including *Turbo Meltdown* and *Resonance Riot*, continue to showcase their adventurous blend of sound that defies simple categorization.
