Doc Watson, born Arthel Lane Watson on March 3, 1923, was an American guitarist, songwriter, and singer of bluegrass, folk, country, blues, and gospel music. He was known for his flatpicking skills on the acoustic guitar and his knowledge of traditional American music. Despite losing his eyesight before his first birthday, Doc Watson rose to become a virtuoso musician whose style influenced future generations. Merle Watson, his son, born on February 8, 1949, became an accomplished guitarist in his own right, often performing alongside his father.
Together, Doc & Merle Watson created a legacy of incredible musicianship and collaboration. Throughout the 1960s to the early 1980s, the father-son duo performed and recorded extensively, blending Doc's traditional Appalachian musical roots with Merle's modern sensibilities. Sadly, Merle's life and burgeoning career were cut short by a tractor accident in 1985. Their music, however, continued to resonate with and inspire countless musicians and fans. With albums like "Down South" and "Black Mountain Rag", the pair crafted an oeuvre that showcased their exceptional talent and chemistry, while projects such as "Remembering Merle" pay tribute to the profound impact of their musical partnership.
