Chico Science

Chico Science, born Francisco de Assis França on March 13, 1966, in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, was a visionary musician and a leading figure in the formation of the Manguebeat (or Mangue Bit) movement, a cultural and musical revolution that blended regional rhythms of Brazil's Northeast with rock, hip-hop, and other global music styles. Science's entry into the music scene was marked by his unique ability to amalgamate the traditional sounds of maracatu, coco, and forró with the energetic beats of modern genres, creating a sound rooted in Brazilian culture yet innovative and fresh.

He formed the band Chico Science & Nação Zumbi in the early 1990s, a collaboration that proved to be critical in solidifying the Manguebeat genre. Their debut album "Da Lama Ao Caos" (From Mud to Chaos) released in 1994, was met with critical acclaim for its avant-garde approach and socio-political lyrics. This was followed by the 1996 album "Afrociberdelia," which continued to push the boundaries of Brazilian music with its mix of African and electronic influences. Chico Science's life and burgeoning career, however, were tragically cut short after a car accident led to his untimely death on February 2, 1997. Despite his brief career, his influence on Brazilian music remains profound; his work with Nação Zumbi is celebrated for redefining the musical landscape of Brazil and inspiring a whole new generation of musicians. Posthumous releases such as "C.S.N.Z. (Dia)" and collections like "Maxximum - Chico Science & Nação Zumbi" have kept his innovative spirit and music alive for new audiences to discover.
