Michael William Balfe (1808–1870) was an Irish composer, singer, and impresario who became one of the most celebrated figures in 19th-century English opera. Born in Dublin, Balfe started as a violinist before his booming baritone voice launched a performing career across Europe. He eventually shifted focus to composing, creating over 20 operas that blended Italian operatic flair with English sensibilities.
