Anzala (born Yvon Auberge, May 21, 1948) is a celebrated Guadeloupean singer, songwriter, and performer, widely recognized as a leading figure in the vibrant world of gwoka—the traditional drum-based music of Guadeloupe. Born in the town of Le Moule, Anzala left school at a young age and worked on a sugarcane plantation before becoming a carpenter and later a traveling merchant. His musical journey took off after he began performing at local events, eventually catching the attention of producer Raymond Célini, who helped him record his first album—a success that cemented Anzala’s place in Guadeloupian music. Over the years, he’s worked with other gwoka greats like Vélo and Camille Soprann, and even ventured into self-production starting in the 1990s, while also crafting his own drums using a unique technique.
Friends know Anzala as a true ambassador of gwoka, blending deep tradition with his own creative spirit. His music, including recent releases like "Celou Mwen A Kila," "Cé Nou Memm Ki La," and tracks released under his own name, keeps the heart of Guadeloupe’s culture alive for fans old and new.
