Hi Rhythm Section

Hi Rhythm Section was the legendary house band behind Memphis soul powerhouse Hi Records during the 1970s. Anchored by brothers Teenie (guitar), Charles (keyboards), and Leroy "Flick" Hodges (bass), along with drummer Howard Grimes and later Archie "Hubbie" Turner on keys, these session musicians shaped the gritty, hypnotic grooves on classic albums by Al Green, Ann Peebles, Syl Johnson, and O.V. Wright. Their loose-but-tight pocket, marked by Teenie’s chicken-scratch guitar and Charles’ swirling organ, became synonymous with the raw, spiritualized soul sound that defined an era. Though rarely in the spotlight, their live albums like *On the Loose* and recent archival releases (*Live in Memphis*) showcase their funkier instrumental side, proving why they remain rhythm section royalty.
