Bhaskar Chandavarkar

Bhaskar Chandavarkar (1936–2009) was a visionary Indian composer, sitar virtuoso, and pioneer of blending classical Indian music with modern experimental sounds. A key figure in India’s 20th-century music scene, he crafted mesmerizing soundscapes that bridged traditional ragas with electronic elements, film scores, and global influences. His work ranged from scoring arthouse films (like Kumar Shahani’s *Maya Darpan*) to creating ambient albums like *Soundscapes - Seas* and *The Elements - Fire*, which reimagined nature’s rhythms through a musical lens.

A respected professor at Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Chandavarkar mentored generations of artists while staying creatively restless. Even after his passing, his legacy thrives through reissues and compilations like *Seasons* and *Marathi Classics Unplugged*, which showcase his knack for reinventing folk tunes and classical motifs with playful, genre-defying flair. Whether scoring films, improvising on sitar, or fusing dhol beats with electronic textures (as heard in *Kunachya Khandyavar Kunache Oze*), his work remains a vibrant bridge between heritage and innovation.
