Józef Wieniawski was a Polish composer, pianist, and teacher born in 1837, and the younger brother of the famed violinist Henryk Wieniawski. A virtuoso pianist in his own right, Józef studied at the Leipzig Conservatory and later in Paris, where he developed a reputation for his elegant playing and deep musical understanding. He toured extensively across Europe during the 19th century, performing both solo and chamber works, often in collaboration with some of the era’s celebrated musicians.
As a composer, Wieniawski wrote a broad range of music including piano solos, chamber works, and orchestral pieces. Though less well-known than his brother, his compositions—such as his piano sonatas, cello sonata, and various character pieces—reflect the Romantic style with emotional depth and technical brilliance. In recent years, renewed interest in his music has led to premiere recordings and performances, helping to shed light on his overlooked contribution to 19th-century classical music.
