John Coprario

John Coprario (c. 1570–1626) was an English composer and viol player who left a lasting mark on early 17th-century music, blending Italian flair with English elegance. Born Giovanni Coprario, he famously anglicized his name after settling in England, where he became a favorite in royal circles, composing for the courts of James I and Charles I. His works, like the haunting *Funeral Teares* and the poignant *Songs of Mourning*, showcase his talent for weaving emotion into consort music, lute songs, and instrumental pieces. Coprario also helped pioneer the "lyra viol" style and influenced the transition from Renaissance polyphony to Baroque expressiveness. His collaborations with court musicians and contributions to collections like *For His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts* cement his role as a bridge between eras—and a master of music that still resonates with mournful beauty and regal grandeur.
