Prayers is a Chicano electronic rock duo from San Diego, California, formed in 2013 by Rafael Reyes (also known as Leafar Seyer) and Tijuana-born producer Dave Parley. They’re known for pioneering a genre they call “cholo goth,” a powerful blend of darkwave, gothic synths, and gangster rap influences that reflect Reyes’ background in gang culture and his love for gothic subculture. Their music is unmistakably moody and confrontational, often delivering gritty storytelling layered over pulsing synths and ominous beats.
Prayers gained significant attention with their 2014 album "SD Killwave" and the breakout single "Gothic Summer," and have since collaborated with other notable artists, including Travis Barker of Blink-182. Their imagery and lyrics often tackle themes of identity, violence, spirituality, and survival, making their work both deeply personal and socially resonant. With Reyes’ raw vocal delivery and Parley’s hypnotic production, Prayers continues to push boundaries and challenge stereotypes in alternative and Latinx music scenes.
