Bluegrass Student Union

Bluegrass Student Union was a distinguished barbershop quartet that left a significant mark on the barbershop music scene. Formed in 1974 in Louisville, Kentucky, the group consisted of tenor Kipp Buckner, lead Allen Hatton, baritone Dan Burgess, and bass Rick Staab. Their tight harmonies, charismatic performances, and dedication to the craft quickly propelled them to the forefront of their genre. The quartet experienced the pinnacle of their success in 1978 when they won the International Quartet Championship at the annual convention of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. (SPEBSQSA), now known as the Barbershop Harmony Society.

The artistry of Bluegrass Student Union extended beyond just competition; they were equally renowned for their educational contributions and efforts to preserve the history of barbershop quartet singing. Following their competitive years, they remained active in performances and workshops, and their series of albums—conveniently titled "Volume I" through "Volume VI"—serve as a testament to their vocal prowess and the evolution of their sound. Each volume showcases a blend of classic barbershop tunes, as well as arrangements that pushed the boundaries of the genre, reaffirming their influence and ongoing legacy within the a cappella community.
