George Macfarren

George Macfarren was a prominent English composer and music scholar of the 19th century. Born in 1813, he was a prolific composer across various genres, including opera, symphony, concerto, chamber music, and oratorio. Despite losing his sight in his early thirties, Macfarren continued to compose and became a respected teacher and writer on music theory. He held important positions such as Principal of the Royal Academy of Music and Professor of Music at Cambridge University. His opera "Robin Hood" and his symphonies are among his best-known works, showcasing his melodic gift and mastery of orchestral color. He championed the music of earlier English composers and played a significant role in shaping the musical landscape of Victorian England.

Macfarren's dedication to music education and scholarship left a lasting impact. He wrote several influential textbooks on music theory and harmony, which were widely used for many years. His commitment to promoting English music and his own substantial body of work solidified his place as a key figure in 19th-century British music. While perhaps not as widely recognized today as some of his contemporaries, his contributions to music and music education remain significant.
