Necromantia is a band that has made a significant impact on the underground black metal scene, particularly known for their distinctive use of 8-string bass guitars in lieu of rhythm guitars, which contributes to their uniquely dark and atmospheric sound. Formed in late 1989 in Athens, Greece by bassist Magus Wampyr Daoloth (also known simply as The Magus) and the late Baron Blood (real name: Makis), Necromantia stands among the pioneering acts of the Hellenic black metal movement, alongside other notable groups such as Rotting Christ and Varathron.
The band's discography spans several landmark releases that have helped define their status within the genre. "Crossing The Fiery Path" (1993), Necromantia's debut album, carved out a niche with its symphonic elements and occult themes. Following releases, such as "Scarlet Evil Witching Black" (1995) and "The Sound Of Lucifer Storming Heaven" (2007), continued to enhance their reputation with richly textured arrangements and epic compositions. Necromantia's ability to blend raw, aggressive metal with melodic and symphonic overtones was further cemented with "Ancient Pride" (1997), an EP that showcased their strong affinity for ancient Hellenic culture and mythology. Following a period of inactivity, the band returned with "To the Depths We Descend" (2021), which was bittersweet for fans as it served as a final testament to Necromantia's legacy following the passing of Baron Blood in 2019. This work is a continuation of Necromantia's contribution to the evolution of black metal with its intricate sonic landscapes, steeped in esoteric and dark thematic content.
