Dick Heckstall-Smith

Dick Heckstall-Smith was a legendary British saxophonist known for his pivotal role in the development of British blues and jazz-rock during the 1960s and '70s. A master of both tenor and soprano sax, he brought a fiery, improvisational edge to the bands he played with, which included Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated, the Graham Bond Organisation, and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. He was also a founding member of the groundbreaking band Colosseum, where his jazz chops helped blend rock and blues into complex, high-energy fusion.

Heckstall-Smith was especially known for his ability to play two saxophones at once—a theatrical flourish that mirrored his musical versatility. Beyond his band work, he also pursued solo projects, releasing several albums like A Story Ended and Blues and Beyond. His influence continues to resonate with fans of both jazz and rock, and his contributions helped shape the sound of a transformative era in British music.
