The Waybacks

The Waybacks are a San Francisco Bay Area-based Americana band known for their adventurous blend of bluegrass, folk, jazz, and swing, highlighted by virtuosic acoustic and electric guitar work, fiddle, and a lively rhythm section. Formed in 1998 with key members like James Nash, a gifted guitarist and songwriter from Nashville, the band quickly moved from local pub gigs to national and international festival stages. Their sound is characterized by spirited improvisation and genre-defying performances, making each show a unique experience. Over the years, they have seen lineup changes but maintained a core driven by Nash’s guitar and songwriting, with current members including fiddler Warren Hood, bassist Joe Kyle Jr., and drummer Chuck Hamilton.

With albums like *Devolver* (2000), *Loaded* (2008), and recent releases such as *Getting In Tune* (2024), The Waybacks continue to evolve their sound while honoring their roots. Critics have praised their technical skill, playful irreverence, and the dynamic interplay between members. Their live performances are especially notable for their energy, instrumental mastery, and the seamless mix of traditional and progressive Americana influences. The band’s willingness to push boundaries while maintaining tight musicianship has garnered a dedicated following and critical acclaim.
