Middlesex County Volunteers Fifes & Drums

The Middlesex County Volunteers Fifes & Drums (MCV) is a dedicated, not-for-profit ensemble founded in 1982 by Boston-area musicians passionate about exploring and performing traditional regimental fife and drum music from the 17th to early 19th centuries. Originally formed near the end of the U.S. Bicentennial from musicians affiliated with various Minuteman companies in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, MCV has grown into a vibrant repertory group that performs a mix of martial, dance, folk, and contemporary pieces rooted in American and European history. With members ranging from teenagers to seasoned professionals pursuing diverse vocations, they balance “real life” with a shared love for the living tradition of fife and drum music through extensive performances and educational outreach.

MCV is notable for being the first American fife and drum corps to perform at prestigious international events like the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, with appearances in Scotland, Australia, and other countries, showcasing their historic music to global audiences. Their recordings, such as *Lafayette’s Ghost* and *Military Music from the Age of Reason*, evidence their commitment to preserving and invigorating this unique American musical heritage. The ensemble performs regularly across the Northeastern U.S. and collaborates with prominent groups and artists, blending history, music, education, and entertainment in their performances.
