Eivind Groven

Eivind Groven was a Norwegian composer, music theorist, and folk music collector known for his unique ability to blend the sounds of traditional Norwegian folk music with classical forms. Born in 1901, Groven grew up in a folk music-rich environment and later became a passionate advocate for Norway’s musical heritage. His classical compositions often feature elements like modal harmonies and traditional dance rhythms, reflecting his deep love for rural Norwegian musical traditions.

One of Groven’s most fascinating contributions to the world of music was his work with tuning systems—he even developed an experimental organ capable of just intonation adjustments in real time. Among his best-known works are his first symphony, “Towards the Mountains,” and his Norwegian symphonic dances, which beautifully capture the natural and cultural landscapes of Norway.
