Elephant9

Elephant9 is a Norwegian progressive rock/jazz fusion group known for their energetic blend of jazz improvisation and rock-oriented rhythms. The band, which formed in 2006, consists of Ståle Storløkken on keyboards, Nikolai Hængsle (previously known as Nikolai Eilertsen) on bass guitar, and Torstein Lofthus on drums. Their style has been described as a mix between the classic 1970s fusion of outfits like Herbie Hancock's Headhunters and the more experimental side of rock, drawing comparisons to the works of bands such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Medeski Martin & Wood.

Marked by their virtuosic instrumentals and the high level of musicianship, Elephant9 quickly established themselves within the Nordic jazz scene. With albums like "Dodovoodoo" (2008), "Walk the Nile" (2010), and "Atlantis" (2012), the band has demonstrated a penchant for improvisation and a flair for sonically rich, often grandiose compositions. The releases "Silver Mountain" (2015), "Greatest Show on Earth" (2018), and the two-volume live recording "Psychedelic Backfire I & II" (2019) reinforced their reputation, showcasing the band's ferocious energy in a live setting. Their 2021 album "Arrival of the New Elders" continues their exploration of instrumental progressive fusion, ensuring that the band remains at the forefront of the genre's innovative edge. Elephant9's discography is a testament to their ability to blend genres into a unique and captivating sound.
