Jascha Horenstein

Jascha Horenstein was a highly respected conductor known for his passionate interpretations of late-Romantic and early modern repertoire. Born in Kiev in 1898, he moved to Vienna and later studied with Franz Schreker, aligning himself with the musical world of Mahler, Bruckner, and Schoenberg. Horenstein built a reputation as a dedicated champion of composers who were less frequently performed during much of the 20th century, especially Gustav Mahler and Anton Bruckner, long before their works found wide popularity.

Throughout his career, Horenstein collaborated with leading orchestras across Europe and the United States, and his recordings—particularly of Mahler’s and Bruckner’s symphonies—are still celebrated for their intensity and insight. He was also admired for his adventurous programming, often choosing challenging or neglected works. Despite facing obstacles during the rise of the Nazi regime, which interrupted his career in Germany, Horenstein persevered and left a lasting legacy both in the concert hall and on record.
