Mario Brunello

Mario Brunello is a celebrated Italian cellist known for his expressive playing and deep exploration of both core classical repertoire and lesser-known gems. A winner of the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1986, Brunello has enjoyed a rich international career performing as a soloist with top orchestras, including the London Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, and NHK Symphony. He’s especially admired for his unique work with the violoncello piccolo—a smaller, 5-string cello particularly suited to Baroque music—which he’s featured on in numerous critically acclaimed recordings.

Beyond the concert stage, Brunello is also passionate about chamber music and collaborations across genres. He’s a frequent guest at major festivals and has worked with artists like Gidon Kremer and Martha Argerich. His recent recordings delve deeply into the music of J.S. Bach, Mieczysław Weinberg, and Ludwig van Beethoven, often offering fresh interpretations through arrangements and historical instruments. In addition to his performance career, Brunello is the artistic director of the Arte Sella and I Suoni delle Dolomiti festivals, blending music with natural environments in his native Italy.
