Itamar Assumpção

Itamar Assumpção was a seminal figure in the Brazilian contemporary music scene, known for his distinctive merging of samba, rock, funk, and various Brazilian music styles, often layered with poetic and sharp-witted lyrics. Born on September 13, 1949, in Tietê, São Paulo, Assumpção was a self-taught musician and a pivotal member of the Vanguarda Paulista movement in the late '70s and '80s, a group of artists who challenged the norms of mainstream Brazilian music with more avant-garde and experimental approaches.

Throughout his career, Assumpção fostered a reputation for being fiercely independent, often producing and releasing his work on his own label, avoiding the constraints of commercial record companies. His discography, including albums like "Beleléu e Banda Isca de Polícia" and "Pretobrás," reflects a commitment to innovation and a refusal to be pigeonholed. "Bicho de 7 Cabeças, Vol. 3," "Pretobrás" series, and "Intercontinental! Quem Diria! Era Só o Que Faltava!" showcase his ability to infuse social commentary with eclectic musical forms. He passed away at 53 on June 12, 2003, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire new generations of Brazilian artists who veer off the beaten path.
