808 State

808 State is an influential electronic music outfit hailing from Manchester, England, that became a significant part of the dance music landscape in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Formed in 1987 by Graham Massey, Martin Price, and Gerald Simpson (later known as A Guy Called Gerald), 808 State took their name from the legendary Roland TR-808 drum machine, which was a staple in the development of house music. Though Simpson departed after their debut album, the remaining members, including later addition Andrew Barker, pushed the boundaries of acid house, techno, and ambient music.

The group achieved commercial success and critical acclaim with their 1989 album "Ninety," featuring the track "Pacific State," a sublime fusion of acid house and ambient textures that became an anthem for the era. Their follow-up, "ex:el," included collaborations with Björk and New Order's Bernard Sumner, further cementing their legacy within electronic music. Throughout their career, 808 State have been praised for their innovative approach to production and their ability to blend a diverse array of genres into a cohesive sound. Despite changes in the music industry and the ebb and flow of electronic music's popularity, 808 State have continued to release music, including remixes and their 2019 album "Transmission Suite," which showcases their enduring commitment to exploring new sonic territories while remaining true to their roots. Their influence can still be felt in contemporary electronic music, evidenced by the artists seeking their remix touch like Bicep, and the lasting impact of their pioneering sound.
