Jansug Kakhidze

Jansug Kakhidze was a revered Georgian conductor and composer, renowned for his compelling interpretations and contributions to the world of classical music. Kakhidze was born on May 26, 1935, in Tbilisi, Georgia, and demonstrated musical prowess early in life. Over the years, he built a prolific career as both a conductor and a composer, earning acclaim within the Soviet Union and internationally.

Kakhidze's artistic collaborations were especially notable in his interpretations of the works of his compatriot, the Georgian composer Giya Kancheli, as evidenced by his recordings of Kancheli's symphonies and other compositions. Kakhidze held the esteemed position of the chief conductor of the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre, and his influence extended through his nurturing of young talent and his dedication to promoting Georgian music on the world stage. His discography illustrates an affinity for both Georgian compositions and the broader classical canon, with recordings of Tchaikovsky’s "Nutcracker," as well as collections featuring the music of Brahms, Liszt, Mendelssohn, and Mussorgsky. Kakhidze passed away on March 8, 2002, but his legacy endures through his recordings and the many musicians he inspired throughout his career.
