The Orwells were an American rock band formed in Elmhurst, Illinois, in 2009. Known for their rough-edged garage rock sound and energetically rebellious live shows, the band consisted of Mario Cuomo (lead vocals), Dominic Corso (guitar), Matt O'Keefe (guitar), and twins Grant Brinner (bass), and Henry Brinner (drums). They first garnered attention with their explosive 2013 album "Remember When," which caught the ears of a wider audience and showcased their raw, unapologetic approach to rock music, rooted in the traditions of classic garage punk.
The band saw a surge in popularity following the release of their sophomore album, "Disgraceland," in 2014. The album's gritty hooks and candid lyrical outlook on suburban ennui resonated with fans and critics alike, further cementing their status in the indie rock sphere. The Orwells continued to build their discography with "Terrible Human Beings" in 2017 and a string of singles and EPs that highlighted the band's dedication to maintaining an impulsive and authentic sound. Despite their burgeoning success and a growing fanbase, The Orwells disbanded in 2018 amid allegations of sexual misconduct, leaving behind a contentious yet influential mark on the modern rock landscape.
