Ex Deo

Ex Deo is a Canadian symphonic death metal band that infuses the rich tapestry of Roman history into its robust and epic soundscapes. The project was formed in 2008 by Maurizio Iacono, the frontman of the acclaimed death metal group Kataklysm, with the intent to conceptualize the grandeur and drama of ancient Rome within the aggressive framework of metal. Ex Deo distinguishes itself with its thematic focus, each album exploring different eras and figures of Roman lore, blending heavy riffs with orchestral elements that recall the might and splendor of the ancient empire.

The band's discography reads like chapters from a historical text, with albums such as "Romulus" (2009) and "Caligvla" (2012) examining the lives and legacies of Rome's first king and one of its most infamous emperors, respectively. Following the tradition, "The Immortal Wars" (2017) offers a brutal yet melodic narration of the Punic Wars, while "The Thirteen Years of Nero" (2021) delves into the complex rule of one of history's most notorious rulers. Each release has been met with acclaim for its cinematic scope and the thoughtful integration of storytelling with Ex Deo's distinctive symphonic death metal sound.
