Keleketla!

Keleketla! is an expansive collaborative project that emerged from an initial partnership between Coldcut, founders of UK label Ninja Tune, and a cadre of South African musicians, including the Johannesburg-based nonprofit organization Keleketla! Library. The collaborative project is truly international, with participating artists hailing from across the globe including the UK, South Africa, United States, and Nigeria among others. This cross-cultural musical dialogue aims to break down barriers and create a unique fusion of jazz, funk, Afrobeat, dub, and electronic music, all underpinned by political activism and the fight for justice.

Their self-titled debut album, "Keleketla!", released in July 2020, showcases this synergy of sound and protest. It features contributions from icons like Tony Allen, who was the drummer and musical director of Fela Kuti's band Africa '70, rapper Antibalas, and spoken word poet Ghetto Priest, among others. The album received critical acclaim for its ambitious, genre-blurring soundscapes and its ability to channel the spirit of anti-apartheid and civil rights movements into a contemporary musical context. Following the release of their album, they've put out a series of remixes including "Keleketla! Remixes," and EPs like "International Love Affair + Remixes EP," both enriching the original tracks with new perspectives and sounds from respected DJs and producers, ensuring the project's message of unity and resistance keeps resonating globally.
