Digital Underground

Digital Underground was an influential West Coast hip-hop group known for their eclectic style, vibrant funk-inspired beats, and playful approach to rap. Founded in Oakland, California in 1987, the group's core members included Greg "Shock G" Jacobs (also known as Humpty Hump), Jimi "Chopmaster J" Dright, and Kenneth "Kenny-K" Waters. They rocketed to fame with their 1990 hit single "The Humpty Dance," which thrust their larger-than-life alter egos—most notably Shock G's nose-bespectacled Humpty Hump—into the spotlight. The group's debut album, "Sex Packets," was a commercial success and is considered a classic, setting the tone for their adventurous, sample-heavy sound and irreverent lyrics.

Throughout their career, Digital Underground was known not only for their party anthems and audacious humor but also for their role in launching the career of Tupac Shakur, who began as a roadie and backup dancer for the group before making his recording debut on their 1991 single "Same Song." Their discography includes several albums and a number of hit singles like "Kiss You Back" and "Doowutchyalike." Despite never quite matching the commercial peak of their early work, Digital Underground maintained a devoted fan base and continued to release music into the 21st century, including the projects listed above. The band's later work, including the remastered editions of earlier albums and EPs, reflected their enduring dedication to innovate within the genre. Shock G's visionary leadership and the collective's impact on the fusion of funk and hip-hop have cemented Digital Underground's legacy as a unique and pioneering force in the music world.
