Darkthrone

Darkthrone is a band that commands respect in the extreme metal community, having established themselves as one of the pioneers of the Norwegian black metal scene. Initially formed in 1986 under the name Black Death, the band consisted of Gylve Nagell (later known as Fenriz), Ivar Enger (Zephyrous), and Anders Risberget. However, their early work had more of a death metal influence, as heard on their debut album "Soulside Journey." It was not until their pivotal 1992 release, "A Blaze in the Northern Sky," that Darkthrone underwent a significant genre shift, firmly embracing black metal and helping to define its raw, lo-fi aesthetic.

Over the years, Darkthrone has maintained a staunchly DIY ethos, remaining uncompromising in their musical integrity and aesthetic. Their discography — highlighted by seminal works such as "Transilvanian Hunger" and "Panzerfaust" — has become essential listening for fans of the genre. Although comprised of just Fenriz and Nocturno Culto (Ted Skjellum) since 1993 — with the departure of Zephyrous — the band has remained prolific, continuing to evolve while staying true to their roots. Their most recent releases, such as "Eternal Hails......" and "Astral Fortress," showcase a band that still possesses the creativity and passion to explore the dark and frostbitten terrains of metal while also dipping into doom, speed metal, and traditional heavy metal influences. With their unyielding commitment to their craft and loyal fanbase, Darkthrone's legacy is firmly cemented in the annals of metal history.
