Nikolai Karetnikov

**Nikolai Karetnikov** (1930–1994) was a bold and innovative Soviet composer whose works pushed boundaries during a time of strict artistic censorship. A key figure in the Soviet avant-garde, Karetnikov blended modernist techniques like serialism and dodecaphony with deep spiritual themes—a risky move in an officially atheist state. His catalog includes striking orchestral works like *Symphony No. 4, Op. 17* and the ballet *Till Eulenspiegel*, showcasing his knack for dramatic storytelling and complex harmonies. Despite facing political pushback, Karetnikov’s *Eight Sacred Chants, Op. 24* revealed his quiet defiance, weaving sacred texts into hauntingly beautiful choral pieces. Much of his music gained wider recognition after his death, cementing his legacy as a composer who refused to compromise his vision.
