Natalino Otto

Natalino Otto, born Natale Codognotto on December 24, 1912, was a pioneering Italian singer who brought the swing genre to the Italian music scene. Embarking on his musical journey in the 1930s, Otto started as a performer on radio, where his captivating voice and charismatic presence earned him significant attention. After spending some time in the United States in the 1940s, he was deeply influenced by American jazz and swing music, which he would later introduce to the Italian audiences, eventually earning him the nickname "Signor Swing."

Natalino's career flourished in the post-war years, as he successfully merged American musical trends with Italian taste, contributing significantly to the evolution of Italian popular music. His repertoire included a variety of genres, from swing to mambo, and he was known for his dynamic and innovative interpretations of songs. Some of his notable hits included "Mambo Italiano," "Ho un sassolino nella scarpa," and "Mamma voglio anch'io la fidanzata," which resonated with the public and further solidified his status as one of Italy's leading entertainers of the era. Otto's influence persisted even after the peak of his career, as he continued to record and remained a revered figure in the world of Italian music until his passing on October 4, 1969. His musical legacy is captured in compilations and retrospectives, such as "Natalino Otto canta Genova," which celebrate his contribution to Italian song.
