Ruperto Chapí

Ruperto Chapí was a prominent Spanish composer born in 1851, best known for his significant contributions to the zarzuela, a uniquely Spanish form of musical theater that blends spoken dialogue, operatic singing, and popular songs. A versatile and prolific composer, Chapí wrote more than 100 works, ranging from lighter short-form zarzuelas to more ambitious operatic-style productions. Some of his most famous works include La Revoltosa, El Rey que Rabió, and La Bruja, which continue to be staples of the zarzuela repertoire today.

Chapí was also a co-founder of the Sociedad General de Autores de España (SGAE), an important institution for the protection of composers' and authors' rights in Spain. In addition to his theatrical works, Chapí composed orchestral music and string quartets, showcasing his broader skill set beyond the stage. With his vibrant melodies and vivid orchestrations, he helped shape the musical identity of late 19th-century Spain.
