Helium was an American alternative rock band formed in 1992, consisting of Mary Timony on guitar and vocals, Ash Bowie on bass, and Shawn Devlin on drums. Emerging from the same vibrant post-punk and indie rock scene that birthed bands like Pavement and My Bloody Valentine, Helium was known for their unique blend of ethereal vocals, surreal lyrics, and a guitar-heavy sound that could range from hauntingly melodic to aggressively distorted.
Their discography began with the EP "Pirate Prude" in 1994, marking the start of a critically celebrated, though often underground, musical journey. After the release of their forceful and mystical debut album, "The Dirt of Luck," in 1995, Helium continued to refine their sound, creating worlds of sonic exploration rooted in Timony's distinctive songwriting. The band's second full-length album, "The Magic City" in 1997, was a more ambitious and experimental record that expanded on their signature style. They also produced a noteworthy EP "No Guitars" in the same year, which further showcased their ability to push the envelope of indie rock. Although their output was relatively sparse, Helium left a lasting impression on the 90s music scene with their dreamlike and guitar-focused style. Despite their dissolution in 1998, their music endured and continued to garner attention, as evidenced by the compilation album "Ends With And" (2017), which assembled their rarities and singles, offering a comprehensive look at their influential and otherworldly sound.
