George Lewis

George Lewis (1900 – 1968) was an influential clarinetist who became a prominent figure in the New Orleans jazz revival movement. Born in the cradle of jazz, New Orleans, Louisiana, Lewis grew up in a musical environment which, combined with his natural talent, enabled him to become one of the most revered clarinetists of the traditional New Orleans jazz style. He began playing professionally in his teens, eventually gaining more recognition in the 1940s when the revival of traditional jazz took hold.

In the 1950s, he recorded with Bunk Johnson, another key figure in the New Orleans jazz scene, and by this time Lewis's reputation had grown beyond the local circuit. His work with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the subsequent albums "Jazz At Preservation Hall: The George Lewis Band Of New Orleans" and "George Lewis at San Jacinto Hall" captured the essence of the old-style Dixieland jazz that was the foundation of his career. His expressive, soulful clarinet playing and adherence to the classic New Orleans style made him an authentic voice in the genre, venerated by both peers and aficionados. His influence on the jazz world continued even after his death, with his recordings continuing to inspire both listeners and musicians who celebrate the enduring legacy of New Orleans jazz.
