Little Jimmy Dickens

Little Jimmy Dickens, born James Cecil Dickens on December 19, 1920, was an American country music singer famous for his humorous novelty songs, his small stature – he was 4 ft 11 in (1.50 m) tall – and his rhinestone-studded outfits. He started his career in the late 1930s, performing on local radio stations and gaining popularity with his charismatic stage presence and his mastery of traditional country humor and storytelling. After a performance at the Grand Ole Opry, he was invited to join the cast, making him one of the Opry's most enduring and beloved members until his passing.

Throughout his career, which spanned several decades, Little Jimmy Dickens amassed a body of work that celebrated the essence of country music. Known for his hits like "May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose," which became his most famous recording and reached Number One on the country chart and even broke into the pop Top 15 in 1965, Dickens recorded numerous singles and albums that resonated with fans for their wit, heart, and soulfulness. His legacy is that of a pioneer in the country genre who bridged the gap between old-time country and the sleeker Nashville sound, and he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1983. Little Jimmy Dickens passed away on January 2, 2015, but he left behind a vast collection of songs that continued to influence the genre and entertain audiences around the world.
