Geoffrey Tozer

Geoffrey Tozer (1954–2009) was a celebrated Australian pianist and recording artist known for his profound interpretations and broad repertoire. A child prodigy, he made his concerto debut at the age of nine with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He was the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards, including the Churchill Fellowship and the Silver Medal of the Harriet Cohen International Music Awards. His career was marked by a passion for the works of lesser-known composers, which he brought into the spotlight through both performance and recording.

Tozer's discography reflects his special affinity for the music of Nikolai Medtner, an often-neglected Russian composer whose works he championed with zeal. Tozer's recordings of Medtner's piano concertos and solo piano works are considered definitive interpretations that have brought greater attention to the composer's oeuvre. His concert recordings, like those from Hobart, Takapuna, Auckland, and Osaka, showcase the diverse and extensive nature of his live performances. Additionally, his repertoire extended to the concertos of Alan Rawsthorne and the symphonic works of Rimsky-Korsakov, demonstrating his versatility and wide-ranging musical interests. Beyond his solo career, Tozer collaborated with other artists, as evidenced by his involvement in Rawsthorne's Concerto for Two Pianos and Susan Gritton's Medtner - Goethe Lieder. His profound impact on the music world continues to influence musicians and listeners alike, ensuring the legacy of his artistry endures well beyond his years.
