Mercyland

Mercyland was a scrappy punk rock band hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, that burned bright and fast in the late '80s underground scene. Formed in 1985 by bassist/vocalist David Barbe, guitarist Andrew Carter, and drummer Joel Burkhart, they quickly became known for their raw, high-energy sound that blended punk aggression with Southern grit, drawing influences from the nearby Athens music world (think R.E.M. and other college rock vibes). Their debut album, *No Feet on the Cowling* (1988), captured that chaotic spirit with tracks full of driving riffs and Barbe's snarling lyrics, while their follow-up *We Never Lost a Single Game* (1989) kept the momentum going before the band called it quits that same year.

Though short-lived, Mercyland left a lasting mark on the indie punk landscape, with Barbe going on to bigger things like producing for Drive-By Truckers and playing in bands like Sugar. Fans still dig their no-nonsense attitude and the way they embodied the DIY ethos of the era—recent remasters of their stuff just prove how timeless that edge really is!
