Los Originarios del Plan are a vibrant arpa grande ensemble led by harpist Leonel “La Chona” Mendoza Acevedo, bringing the rich sounds of Michoacán’s son planeco tradition to life. Based in California’s San Joaquin Valley, the group has become a leading voice in keeping this centuries-old regional style alive, connecting immigrant communities from Michoacán to the West Coast through music that celebrates joy, faith, and belonging. Their performances, built on the resonant strings of the large harp, violin, and the percussive five-string vihuela, are a staple at community gatherings like weddings, baptisms, and quinceañeras.
Rooted in the cultural cradle of El Plan, each member grew up immersed in the music and traditions of their homeland, carrying forward the legacy of their forebearers while sharing it with new audiences. With their latest album, ¡Puritito Michoacán!, Los Originarios del Plan continue to honor their heritage, performing a mix of corridos, sones planecos, and canciones rancheras that bridge generations and borders. Their music is a heartfelt tribute to the land, the people, and the enduring power of song to bring communities together.
