Nipun Cheema is a talented Indian pianist and composer from Chandigarh. He began playing the piano at a young age and, by the age of 9, was leading a group called 'Piano Bar' in his hometown. Cheema is the founder of the Co.Lab Teaching Studio in Chandigarh, where he teaches classical and jazz music. He has been involved in various musical projects, including curating the Chandigarh Jazz Fest and working with different bands. Notably, he was the creative director for the second edition of the Open Hand Jazz Fest in 2019. Cheema gained significant attention with the release of his solo piano album "Miniatures" in 2022, which was well-received on multiple music platforms. His music often blends elements of jazz, classical, and folk styles.
Cheema holds a research degree in ethnomusicology from Cardiff University, focusing on folk accordion. He leads the musical project "Song of the Ghetto," which combines folk, jazz, and original compositions. His work also includes collaborations with other artists and bands, showcasing his versatility in the music scene. Despite jazz being a niche genre in Chandigarh, Cheema continues to contribute to its growth through his performances and teaching. His recent releases include "Tone Poems, Vol. 1" and "Preludes," further showcasing his creative depth in piano music.
