Kari Turunen

Kari Turunen is a Finnish artistic director, choral conductor, ensemble tenor, and music scholar and lecturer. Born on September 5, 1962, in Joensuu, Finland, he spent part of his childhood in Australia. Turunen studied choral conducting at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and later earned a Doctorate in early music performance practice from the University of the Arts, Helsinki. He has had a distinguished career, serving as the artistic director of several choirs, including the Vancouver Chamber Choir since 2019. Turunen has been recognized for his contributions to choral music, including being named choral conductor of the year in Finland in 2008.

He is also a founding member of Lumen Valo, an eight-member vocal ensemble specializing in early music. His work spans a wide range of repertoire, with a focus on early music and contemporary compositions. Turunen is known for balancing scholarly activities with artistic work, emphasizing the interconnection between performance and scholarship. Outside of music, he enjoys cricket and has been involved with various sports activities throughout his life.
