Sula Spirit, also known as Nana Sula Spirit or Janet Sula Evans, is a multifaceted artist and cultural figure based in New Orleans. She is a singer, songwriter, author, producer, painter, bead artist, and teacher deeply rooted in African spiritual traditions. Initiated as a Priestess of Mami Wata in Ghana, she combines her extensive knowledge of West African chants and Orisha mysteries with her musical talents. Sula Spirit’s solo project "A Journey Within," recorded in Tanzania, blends Orisha, Hip Hop, and Reggae influences, reflecting her rich cultural experiences and spiritual journey. She is also active in bands like Coin-Coin and The Maroons, and has contributed significantly to Yoruba language preservation through her book and CD project "Spirit of the Orisha".
Beyond her music, Sula Spirit is a respected spiritual leader and educator, founding the Temple of Light Ilé de Coin Coin in New Orleans, a temple dedicated to spiritual elevation. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in African Studies and English Literature from Rutgers University and has worked extensively in community development in Africa. Sula Spirit is deeply involved in her community as a birth doula, a board member of the Congo Square Preservation Society, and a Medicine Queen of the Mardi Gras Indian Tribe Mandingo Warriors. Her recent releases include singles like "Powder 4 Mami Wata" (2025) and "Mami Wata" (2021), which continue to showcase her blend of sacred themes and vibrant musical styles.
