Lisa Ullén is a highly acclaimed pianist and composer, born in Seoul, Korea, but raised in the northern part of Sweden. She is based in Stockholm and graduated from the Royal Musical Academy there, where she studied classical piano in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Since the late 1990s, Ullén has dedicated herself to improvised music, including free jazz, avant-garde, and contemporary classical music. Known for her distinctive and uncompromising style, she has produced over fifteen albums and has collaborated with numerous Swedish artists and dancers. Her work includes scoring for dramatic productions and performing music by contemporary composers. In 2018, she released the triple album "Piano Works" and was awarded the Jazz Composer of the Year prize by Swedish Radio.
Ullén is also recognized for her work with various ensembles, including the trio Space, alongside Elsa Bergman and Anna Lund. Her discography includes notable albums such as "Carve," "Look Right," "Quarrtsiluni," and "Piano Works." Her music often explores the boundaries of improvisation, showcasing her unique approach to tonal texture and musical vision. Ullén's contributions to the music scene have earned her international recognition as a leading figure in free jazz and experimental music.
