The Life and Times is an American alternative rock band that formed in Kansas City, Missouri, in 2002. Gravitating around the core figure of Allen Epley, former frontman for the influential rock outfit Shiner, this project saw him continuing his sonic explorations into richly textured and spacey soundscapes underpinned by a gutsy rock instrumentation. The band’s lineup stabilized with drummer Chris Metcalf and bassist Eric Abert, both of whom complement Epley's vision with taut, muscular performances that give The Life and Times' music its distinctively hypnotic edge.
Their discography is a testament to the band’s evolution, with each release showcasing their ability to weave an array of influences into cohesive, atmospheric albums. Their self-titled 2017 release "The Life And Times" stands as their newest full-length offering, following the introspective journey laid out in "Lost Bees" (2014) and the more aggressive tones found in "No One Loves You Like I Do" (2012). Earlier albums like "Tragic Boogie" (2009) reflect a band reveling in the expansive possibilities of sound, and "Suburban Hymns" (2005) sees them establishing their identity with a perfect blend of melody and dissonance. Even their early EP "The Flat End Of The Earth" (2003) hinted at a band with an ambitious, experimental streak. "The Life and Times on Audiotree Live," along with the single "Day II b/w Day III," further capture the band’s invigorating live presence, which remains an integral part of their essence. Each release serves as a chapter in the ongoing narrative of a band perennially striving to push the boundaries of the rock genre while maintaining an inimitable identity in an ever-changing musical landscape.
