The Eugen Cicero Trio was a musical ensemble led by Romanian-German jazz pianist Eugen Cicero, known for his unique "Swinging Classics" style which combined classical music with swing and jazz interpretations. Born on June 27, 1940, in Romania, Eugen Cicero was a child prodigy who went on to study classical piano at the Bucharest Conservatory. He moved to West Germany in the early 1960s and quickly gained fame for his remarkable technique and the innovative way he bridged the gap between classical music and jazz.
Cicero's trio typically featured him on piano, accompanied by a double bassist and a drummer. Over the years, the members of the trio might have changed, but the essence of Cicero's vision remained consistent. He delighted audiences with renditions of classical pieces by composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, cleverly infused with the spontaneous swing and rhythm of jazz. Releases like "Jazz Bach" showcase the ingenuity of Cicero's approach, while albums like "Lullabies" and "Guten Abend, gut' Nacht" display the trio's versatility and ability to explore softer, more lyrical territory. Cicero's ability to blend the structured precision of classical music with the freedom and expressiveness of jazz earned him a dedicated following and a place among the notable jazz pianists of his time. His creative output continued to influence and inspire long after his passing on December 5, 1997.
