Asylum Kids

The Asylum Kids were a pioneering South African punk rock band formed in Johannesburg in 1980. The group consisted of Robbi Robb, Dino Archon, and Steve Howells. They emerged during a tumultuous period in South Africa, capturing the essence of the post-punk era with their unique blend of anti-establishment punk and a distinctly South African twist. Their music was characterized by its raw energy and socio-political themes, drawing inspiration from artists like MC5 and early Police material. The band gained popularity for their live performances, which were often described as revolutionary and vibrant.

The Asylum Kids released notable albums such as "Fight It with Your Mind" and "Solid Principles," the latter being highly regarded as one of the finest rock records to come out of South Africa. Despite facing challenges like limited radio airplay and security police surveillance, the band continued to push forward with their music, advocating for non-violent change in a country seeking it. After a couple of years, Robbi Robb went on to form Tribe After Tribe, marking a new chapter in his musical journey.
