Orchestre National De Jazz

Orchestre National De Jazz (ONJ), also known as the National Jazz Orchestra, is a distinguished French ensemble that has become integral to the landscape of contemporary jazz in Europe, and particularly in France, since its inception in 1986. The ONJ functions under the auspices of the French Ministry of Culture, with a mission to reflect the multifaceted nature of jazz and contribute to its evolution. Under the leadership of successive artistic directors, each bringing their own unique vision, the ONJ has continually reinvented itself approximately every three years. This structure encourages creative risk-taking and ensures a fresh and dynamic approach to both performance and composition.

The ONJ's discography showcases a breadth of project themes and ambitious collaborations, often blurring the lines between jazz and other musical traditions. Releases like "Ex Machina," "Los Angeles Imaginary," and "Dracula" reflect orchestral narrativity and a penchant for concept albums. The live recording "Dancing in Your Head(s)" from the Jazzdor Strasbourg-Berlin Festival in 2019 highlights the ensemble's energetic performance and inventive arrangements, while anniversary concerts, such as the "Concert anniversaire 30 ans" at La Cité de la musique - Philharmonie de Paris, celebrate the orchestra's rich history. With albums like "Europa Oslo" and "Europa Rome," the ONJ continues to embark on geographical and cultural explorations, weaving a tapestry of sounds that transcends national boundaries and contributes to a global jazz conversation.
