She is the daughter of Dharmaraj Thapa, a noted poet and folk singer, and Savitri Thapa, who founded a forum to promote Nepalese folk songs and culture. Gyanu Rana has been actively involved in music since her early childhood and specializes in folk, modern, classical, and pop songs. She has recorded over 2000 songs in various languages, including Nepali, Hindi, Urdu, Bhojapuri, Maithali, and Newari. Her songs have been widely broadcast through national media like Radio Nepal and Nepal Television. Rana has also participated in numerous cultural and international musical concerts across several countries.
Rana's career spans decades, with significant contributions to Nepalese music and culture. She worked at the Royal Nepal Academy from 1970 to 2006, rising to the position of Assistant Director (Music). Gyanu Rana is married to Er. Shree Prakash Jang Rana and has two sons who are engineers.
