Tartit

Tartit is a revered group of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara Desert region, which is primarily located in Mali. Their name translates to "union" in the Tamasheq language, symbolizing their dedication to the peace and unity of their people. The band was formed in the mid-1990s by five women and four men, all of whom hail from the Timbuktu region and were living in a refugee camp at the time due to the political unrest in Mali. Tartit is known for their hypnotic blend of traditional Tuareg melodies, embodied by the haunting rhythms of the tinde drum played by women and the melodic twang of stringed instruments like the imzad and the electric guitar executed by men. Their music is steeped in the rich Tuareg (often referred to as Kel Tamasheq) heritage, entrancing listeners with themes of love, social issues, and the nomadic lifestyle.

The group gained international prominence with their contemplative and soulful repertoire that captures the spirit of the Sahara. With albums such as "Amankor / The Exile," which speaks to the heart of the desert-dwelling Tuareg community's feeling of displacement and longing for their homelands, Tartit has brought the struggles and stories of their people to the global stage. "Afous Dafous," with its trance-like grooves, "Live from the Sahara," which captures the raw energy of their performance and cultural essence, and "Abacabok," an album teeming with poetic lyricism and rhythmic innovation, are all testaments to Tartit's dedication to preserving their cultural legacy through music. Their work resonates not just with fans of world music, but with anyone who appreciates the universal language of music to convey deep emotional narratives and advocate for cultural preservation and peace.
