Phil Dadson is a New Zealand-born experimental sound artist, composer, and founding member of the influential group From Scratch, known for their mesmerizing performances using custom-built instruments and percussive structures. With a background in both visual art and music, Dadson has carved out a unique space where sonic exploration meets sculpture and performance. His work often explores the intersection of sound, movement, and environment, pushing the boundaries of conventional music-making through innovative, handmade instruments and site-specific installations.
Dadson’s artistic journey began in the late 1960s, including an influential stint with the Scratch Orchestra in the UK under Cornelius Cardew. Upon returning to New Zealand, he went on to establish From Scratch in the 1970s—a group that became internationally recognized for its engaging, rhythm-based works using instruments like tuned PVC pipes and other constructed devices. Over the years, Dadson has continued to evolve his practice with solo projects, film collaborations, and multimedia performances that reflect his deep curiosity about sound and its potential as a sculptural and experiential medium.
