Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks are an American indie-rock band formed in 2000 by guitarist and vocalist Stephen Malkmus, known for his previous work as the frontman for the influential indie-rock band Pavement. Upon the disbandment of Pavement at the start of the millennium, Malkmus rapidly moved forward with his musical career, founding The Jicks alongside fellow musicians Joanna Bolme on bass, Mike Clark on various instruments, and John Moen on the drums for their debut. Over the years, the band's lineup has evolved, with current members including Jake Morris on drums, who replaced Moen in 2011.
The band's music is characterized by Malkmus' distinctive lyrical quirks, guitar work, and the integration of various rock subgenres. With the release of their debut album "Stephen Malkmus" in 2001, The Jicks established themselves as torchbearers of indie rock's tradition, albeit with a fresh and exploratory twist. "Pig Lib" (2003) and "Real Emotional Trash" (2008), their subsequent releases, dug deeper into jam-inflected territories, showcasing the band's musical dexterity. The band continued to refine their sound with "Mirror Traffic" (2011) and "Wig Out at Jagbags" (2014), honing a blend of whimsical storytelling and complex, engaging soundscapes. The 2018 album "Sparkle Hard" brought further critical acclaim, with the single "Middle America" serving as a poignant, reflective track that resonates with the band's core fanbase. As a group, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks have maintained an enduring presence in the indie rock scene, known for their compelling live performances and steady contributions to the genre's evolution.
